We acknowledge the Northern Water Project is located on the traditional lands of the Barngarla and Kokatha peoples and we recognise their continuing connection to land and waters. Northern Water aims to provide a secure, climate resilient water source for industry located in South Australia's Upper Spencer Gulf and Far North. This will enable the growth of industries and key mining resources crucial for contributing to decarbonisation initiatives, sustainability and unlocking long term economic prosperity for South Australia.

The Northern Water Project proposes the construction and operation of a large-scale desalination plant at Mullaquana Station in the Upper Spencer Gulf, along with approximately 400km of transfer pipeline connecting to the Far North. Mullaquana Station is located approximately 20km south of Whyalla.

Review the Environmental Impact Statement and make a submission

The Northern Water Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is now on public exhibition and available for public review and submissions.

The public exhibition period closes at 11:59 pm on Friday, 11 December 2026. Submissions must be received before the exhibition period closes.

We are currently in the pre-delivery phase, and our focus is on progressing the Project in a way that respects Country, protects the environment, and delivers value and long-term benefits for South Australia.

    • Working with the Barngarla and Kokatha Traditional Owner groups to negotiate Indigenous Land Use Agreements
    • Engaging with stakeholders and wider community on the EIS
  • Completing investigations and assessments
    • Public exhibition of the Northern Water Environmental Impact Statement for review and submissions feedback
    • Undertaking ongoing technical investigations to support assessment and design
  • Undertaking procurement and commercial processes
    • Conducting a competitive tender process with two shortlisted consortiums
    • Negotiating commercial arrangements for Project delivery and for water purchase
